SGMHA President Update

By SGMHA, 11/25/20, 6:30PM MST

Good Afternoon Hockey Families,

Once again we have all received the news that we were all dreading. It was announced yesterday by the Premier of Alberta that a health state of emergency was being declared in the province. Among the many new measures put in place by the government, youth sports was once again put into a 3 week lockdown. This now means our hockey season is on hold until the 19th of December.

We are continuing to work hard with both our board, league partners and governing bodies to plan and prepare for the safest possible return to hockey for our youth. We are also reaching out to local MLA’s for a response to as to why it is our youth that is being targeted the hardest.

I know that you parents, have many questions as well as frustrations as to what is going on. We will update our webpage with any new information when it becomes available. I know a lot of people have questions about whether they may or may not receive any refunds. This topic will be addressed at season’s end. As this is a rapidly and constantly evolving situation, we will sit down at the end of the year and figure out that possibility.

Parents, coaches, managers and all hockey enthusiasts, I implore you to do whatever it takes to keep our kids engaged and involved in the game. Work with your kids and teams virtually to keep them active. Hold team workouts, stickhandling or shooting clinics via a platform such as zoom. We all literally do not have a lot going on for the next 3.5 weeks, invest your time into our kids. There is also no better time to revive the great game of road hockey!

One final thing, it is our kids that have been forced to make the most sacrifice. From their activities, schooling and social well being, no one has had more taken from them. Now more than ever it is so important that all of us adults do our part to ensure the mental and physical well being of our kids.

Stay tuned, together we will get our great game back on the ice.
